My First 3 Months In Recruitment

I have been at Hoop now for 3 months and it has been a rollercoaster from the very beginning. Starting a new job is a scary experience for anyone at the best of times but it was very nerve wracking for me as this is my first professional career job and I knew nothing about recruitment.

Before my interview, I tried to find out as much as I could about recruitment and what I would be doing day to day but google can only do so much. Recruitment to me is finding people jobs which in essence it still is, but there is so much more that goes into it than google cannot prepare you for. The ups and downs of the role is the thing that initially surprised me, in a matter of hours you can go from having the best day to having the worst and the skills it takes to balance your own emotions throughout it all and remain level-headed is something I still need to master.

However, google also doesn’t prepare you for the best things about recruitment. Having the opportunity to speak with candidates, finding more about them not only professionally but also personally and building great relationships. This has been so rewarding and giving them the call telling them that they have been offered a role is an unbeatable feeling, especially since so many have had such hard times during the pandemic.

I strongly believe I wouldn’t have progressed to the level I have without the support that Hoop provides. Whether you have been there for 3 months like myself or 3+ years, all accomplishments are celebrated. For example, I was awarded employee of the month for august which was a lovely surprise but also even the little things are celebrated like my first placement or hitting personal and team goals.

In the professional services team, if you take or fill a job, it’s a good time to celebrate, if you finally find a great candidate, celebrations are a must and even if you just make it through a rough week with your head above water, celebrate. With the up and down nature of recruitment I think the little celebrations keep everyone going more than the big ones, just knowing that your efforts are acknowledged and appreciated when you’re not having the best week can be what you need to get to Friday.

Recruitment to me now is proactively searching for new roles and clients to work with and building a relationship with them to provide them the best service and being a friendly person to speak to for my candidates when they are looking for a new role and need that confidence boost before an interview, or being a person to turn to who is supportive for candidates who sadly faced redundancy especially because of the pandemic and making sure all candidates are placed in a role that makes them happy and allows them to grow. It may not seem too different than “finding people jobs” but the skills, knowledge and compassion that goes into being a good recruiter is far broader than I first imagined, and I have loved learning from the best in my role at Hoop recruitment.

Hoop Highlights

Hoop Highlights

In 2016 Hoop Recruitment was merely an idea. Now, almost 5 years and 600 permanent placements later we are moving our head office for the 3rd time into a bigger space.

At times like these, it is imperative to take a step back and reflect on the incredible work that has enabled us to achieve this success.

Here are a few of our agency highlights:

The Awards:

  • Small Business of the Year (2017)
  • Chwarae Teg Fair Play Leaders (2018)
  • GOLD Rec Accreditation (2019)
  • Financial & Professional Services of the Year 2020

A Rebrand:

  • After four whirlwind years, we found ourselves as an organisation.
  • The purpose was to reemphasize our core values and beliefs.
  • We teamed up with Marsden/Mee who spoke to each valued member of our team.
  • They grasped what we are all about; helping people find happiness in work, and in life.

New Office Spaces:

  • February 2021, we opened our Swansea branch, specialising in Education and Nursing recruitment.
  • April 2021, we opened our new Head Office space in Cardiff.

April 2021 - Our Hoopies:

  • 4 internal promotions.
  • 2 consultants passing probation.
  • 6 new kickstart employees.
  • 2 new consultants joining the team.

It is important to remember, this would not be possible without the incredible support and continued hard work from our partners and candidates.

From our team to yours, thank you.

The Story of Hoop

The Story of Hoop

I set up Hoop in August 2016 with my cofounding director Paul. We had one goal in mind, create a customer focused recruitment agency that would treat clients and candidates fairly and treat employees as people, not a number.

The brand name came from a simple concept, we needed something short, to the point and simple for candidates and clients to remember. We could not afford to over complicate the name and risk missing out on business, especially in the early days. From this concept Hoop was born. Who could get ‘Hoop’ wrong? Simple to say, easy to spell. One thing we did not factor in, our Valleys accents. Hoop quickly became, ‘Huw from Coop’ and ‘Paul from Hope’. By this point, it was too late, the brand was launched, ‘Coop’ & ‘Hope’ ended up being conversation starters, rather than the hinderance we initially thought it might be.

We started with what we knew, the Social Care market. Within 6 months we made our first 2 hirers, Scott joined to continue with the Social Care market and Rhian opened our 2nd division, Nursing. By the time our first year was coming to an end we made our 5th hire, to support our Social Care offering. An eventful first 12 months, launched a new brand, 5 employees and started to venture into the Nursing market.

Year 2, Nursing was taking off and we quickly invested in the team, 2 new recruits in the first 2 months of the year. Our little office was getting full, we had space for 8, at a push. Social Care was getting busier, another recruit was appointed and lined up to start in Jan 18. Then a CV came in, a teacher with a background in recruitment looking for a new challenge. Ryan joined the team and launched our Education division. That made 9 people, 8 seats. Paul was sent to the attic and the new office search was on.

Year 3 was a long time coming; recruitment was on pause until we had the space to fit people in. The new office was lined up to open in October and the next 3 recruits were ready and waiting to start. With 15 years in recruitment Emily joined Hoop to launch HR, Education and Nursing added new consultants to the teams. Later that year, Donna, another seasoned recruiter started to launch A&F. Education had some fantastic news, we tendered successfully for the NPS contract, Blair joined at the tail end of the year to lead the Education team.

At the start of year 4, Sarah joined to launch the Social Work division, quickly followed by 3 new graduates. Lucy, a long-time competitor joined in Jan 2020 to set up the temporary Social Care offering, shortly followed by another intake of 3 consultants. Then Covid hit. Ups, downs, and the full team pulling together. We could not have asked for more. July 2020, schools confirmed their re-opening in September, Krysh, joined to open the West Wales Education office. September – December 2020 another 4 new faces joined the team, with Covid making a come back this was a mix of office and remote working. April 2021, an office move and refit, enhanced H&S measures in place an updated agile working policy, 10 new starters and the launch of the governments Kickstarter scheme we’re finally back together (more or less), as a team, ready and raring to go for the next chapter at Hoop.

Year 5…
