In September, we came together as a business to celebrate our annual awards night, a highly anticipated event that recognises outstanding achievements and contributions within the organisation. 

This year's awards night was made even more special as it took place at Big Moose, a unique coffee shop and charity organisation known for its strong commitment to social responsibility. This choice of venue was not a coincidence; it was a deliberate decision that echoed Hoop Recruitment's core values. 

One of the highlights of the evening was a presentation that showcased our agency's achievements and milestones from the past year. From successfully placing candidates in dream jobs to expanding our client base, it was clear that we had experienced remarkable growth and success.

Remember, You Are Qualified

One of the first things to remember as an NQT on supply, is that you are qualified for the job. You've earned your qualified teacher status (QTS) or successfully completed a PGCE for a reason. Don't let self-doubt overshadow your confidence. Instead, focus on the fact that you have the knowledge and skills needed to be a teacher.

As an NQT, you will likely have areas of professional development to work on. Embrace this as an opportunity to improve and grow as an educator. Teaching on supply may be vastly different from your previous teaching experiences, but it offers a chance to refine your skills without the constant observation that comes with long-term positions.

Preparation Is Key

Effective preparation can alleviate many anxieties associated with teaching on supply. When working with agencies like Hoop Education, you'll receive essential information about the school you'll be teaching at, including its name and location. However, there are additional steps you can take to ensure a smooth start:

• Location and Parking: Don't underestimate the importance of knowing where to park and how to navigate to the school. Familiarise yourself with the school's vicinity, roads leading to it Google Maps!) and parking options. 

• School Visit: If possible, visit the school before your first day, or consider doing a test drive before you’re due to attend. This can help you get comfortable with the environment, find your way around, and understand the school's layout.

• Behaviour Policy: Different schools have varying approaches to behaviour management. Request the school's behaviour policy in advance or look it up on their website. Understanding their strategies and techniques can be beneficial in managing classroom behaviour effectively. Using recognised methods will help the pupils in your class respond better to you. 

• Contact Information: Know who to contact for support during your teaching assignments. Depending on the school, this could be a department head, a mentor, or a specific staff member. Some schools even use walkie-talkies or internal classroom phones for communication.

Seek support from your agency, school staff, and fellow teachers. Don't hesitate to ask questions, no matter how trivial they may seem. Schools appreciate proactive supply teachers who are willing to communicate and collaborate.

Organisation is your ally when teaching on supply. Maintain a diary or record of your teaching assignments, noting the school, date, and any important details. This can be immensely helpful for logging your sessions as a NQT and maintaining a clear overview of your teaching experiences.

Furthermore, take the time to reflect on your teaching experiences, both the positive and the  challenging ones. Make note of your accomplishments and the lessons you've learned along the way. Reflecting on your journey can help you grow as an educator and stay motivated.
