Job Description

Children and Families Team - Social Worker

Pay rate in line with the All Wales Pledge - £38.15 Umbrella

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council

We are recruiting an experienced Team Manager to lead a Family Safeguarding Team within a progressive local authority committed to improving outcomes for children and families.

This is a pivotal leadership role where you will manage, support and develop a highly motivated multi-disciplinary team working intensively with families to help children achieve their full potential. You will create a positive, reflective team culture while ensuring high standards of practice are maintained in often complex and demanding environments.

As Team Manager, you will build strong working relationships within the team and across partner agencies to deliver an effective, timely and cost-efficient service, in line with statutory duties, local policies and procedures. You will be responsible for performance management, service delivery and ensuring practice remains child-centred and strengths-based.

A key part of the role is providing high-quality supervision and professional support to social workers and partner practitioners, enabling them to work confidently alongside children, young people and their families, championing their needs and building trust and engagement.

The Family Safeguarding Model brings together a range of specialist practitioners within one team, including:

  • Social Workers, who work directly with families to identify risks and build sustainable change

  • Domestic Abuse Practitioners, supporting adults and children affected by domestic abuse

  • Recovery Workers, providing targeted support around substance misuse

  • Mental Health Practitioners, helping parents understand their mental health and its impact on family life

By working collaboratively, the team draws on shared expertise to assess the needs of the whole family and deliver coordinated, effective support that promotes safety, stability and long-term positive outcomes.

This is an excellent opportunity for a confident and values-driven leader seeking to make a meaningful impact within an established Family Safeguarding service.
