Job Description

DoLS (Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards) Team Principal Social Worker

Rhondda Cynon Taff

£41.58 Umbrella

This post is within the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards which is operationally managed by RCT CBC but which also supports assessments within Merthyr Tydfil CBC. The post is held at senior social worker level and pays £41.58 Umbrella per hour. The role offers hybrid working.

There will be an emphasis within this role on DoLS practice and in particular, assisting the team in managing DoLS ‘Supervisory Body’ functions. This will include:

  • Receiving applications and assigning priority to applications, seeking further necessary information as required
  • Liaison with care homes as to applications submitted and promoting awareness of DoLS procedures and applicable law and guidance relating to thresholds and Managing Authority responsibilities
  • Liaising with other local authority staff, care managers and staff from the legal team about urgent, complex or disputed cases which may be in the Court arena
  • Using the local authority’s computer database to seek relevant information
  • Using other computer applications as necessary to discharge Supervisory Body functions and becoming familiar with and using local systems for tracking applications and assessments, recording outcomes and storing them securely
  • Commissioning reports from Best Interests Assessors and Medical Assessors
  • Scrutinising returned reports to ensure a high quality of work and that a respectful and person-centred approach has been taken. Duties include screening for GRPD vulnerability and compliance with the requirements for reports set out in the Schedule to the Mental Capacity Act
  • Giving feedback to assessors about the quality of reports and assisting them in correcting errors
  • Participating in team administration to ensure that assessments are duly prepared and are shared with consultees
  • To work with, assist and deputise for the DoLS Coordinator (the Team Practice and Performance Manager) and other Principal Social Workers
The candidate will have the following qualifications and experience:

  • Have practised as a Best Interests Assessor
  • Have a wide experience of practice issues with different service user groups
  • Prior experience of managing the DoLS Supervisory Body function and scrutinising reports but be willing to implement local practice standards
  • Experience of working on cases referred to the Court of Protection
  • Ideally, will have an awareness of the implications of devolved legislation and Wales-specific guidance, and the structures of NHS Wales and local authorities as they apply to DoLS practice Ideally, will have some familiarity with the diverse communities of Wales and a willingness to engage with local culture
To apply for this role, you will need to hold -

  • A minimum of 6 months experience of working in the UK as a registered social worker
  • A relevant Social Work Qualification
  • Registration with Social Care Wales / Social Work England
  • Enhanced DBS, registered on the update service or be happy to apply for a DBS
  • 3 Years of referencing 
  • Driving license with access to a car
