Cardiff Council is recruiting experienced Child Protection Social Workers to join its dynamic and community-focused teams.

Why Work in Cardiff?
Cardiff, the capital of Wales, is a fast-growing, diverse city and the UK’s first UNICEF Child Friendly City. Social workers in Cardiff have the opportunity to:

  • Develop expertise in child protection across diverse communities

  • Lead and influence practice within Wales

  • Work within a strengths-based (Signs of Safety) approach

  • Progress their careers – 10 internal employees were promoted to higher positions in the past year

Benefits Include:

  • Market Supplement: £5,000 per annum on top of the salary (reviewed annually)

  • Generous Annual Leave: 28–33 days per year, with the option to purchase up to 10 additional days

  • Flexible Working: Hybrid and flexi-schemes to support work-life balance

  • Secure Pension: Membership of the Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan Pension Fund (LGPS)

  • Manageable Caseload: Average of 20 cases per social worker

  • Locality Teams: Based in St Mellons, Fairwater, or Cardiff Bay to link closely with local communities

Role Overview:
Social workers will support children and young people through robust assessment, outcome-focused planning, and effective interventions. Working in partnership with families and multi-agency colleagues, they address both presenting concerns and underlying challenges within a restorative practice framework.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Front-line post-qualifying experience in child protection services

  • Strong safeguarding and child protection expertise, confident with court proceedings

  • Social Work degree, with excellent assessment, report-writing, and record-keeping skills

  • Ability to work under pressure with flexibility, resilience, strong communication, organisation, and IT skills

Career Progression:
Applications may also be considered for Grade 7 Social Worker positions, depending on skills and experience.

Essential Requirement:
Given the nature of the role, only applications from individuals with a social work qualification and registration with either professional body – Social Care Wales or Social Work England – can be considered. Please only apply if you meet this criteria.
